Historical Information
Mark David Chapman (Fort Worth, USA, May 10, 1955) is an American prisoner. He was sentenced to life in prison and has been serving his sentence since December 1980, for the murder of English musician and ex-Beatle John Lennon, in New York on December 8, 1980. His parole, with a biennial possibility allowed from the year 2000 (after twenty years of serving his sentence), has been denied six times.
Chapman claimed that voices told him to commit the crime. It is known that "hearing voices" (the technical term is auditory hallucination) is a phenomenon related to various mental disorders, and can also occur in normal people. This was not the case, and it was not proven to be true, so he was indeed convicted.
Sentenced to life imprisonment, Chapman killed Lennon on the night of December 8, 1980, a Monday, shortly before 11 p.m., in front of the Dakota building, where the ex-Beatle lived. Hours earlier, Lennon had autographed a copy of his newly released album Double Fantasy for Chapman. (Folha)
