11 years is not a long time in the Brazilian legal system; a case takes an average of 15 years to reach the Supreme Court. But with social pressure, the process moved faster, and just over a decade later, here he is.
In 2000, he murdered his girlfriend Sandra Gomide, was imprisoned for 6 months, released, tried, and sentenced to 19 years in 2006.
Most appeals in the Brazilian legal system are merely dilatory, meaning they only serve to stall. A poor person without good lawyers would never be able to prolong the process for so long. And they call this Justice!
"This is a fact that has been dragging on since 2000, and the time has come to put an end to this long journey that has already been traveled. All appeal avenues have indeed been exhausted, first before the Court of Justice of São Paulo; subsequently, on several occasions, before the Superior Court of Justice, and also before this Court," stated Mello during the trial.
Like a good journalist, he answers some questions from his colleagues as he walks to the police station. Pimenta Neves was a great director of an important newspaper, a renowned professional, and committed the crime for passionate reasons.
He did not sleep that night; breakfast was milk coffee and bread.
