Hello everyone, we are starting the recording of our video which concerns an expedition to the Marins Canyon or to the Ribeirão Passa Quatro, also known as Marins Water, also known as Grotão, and further down it is known as Vale do Palmital. This expedition took place on September 8, 2023. It consisted of four people: guide Mr. Afonso, my colleague Vanessa, her husband Rafael. Actually, my friend Vanessa, not my colleague, let's correct that. And me, Daniel. What did we do? I even recommend to everyone to read the article from Alta Montanha that I wrote, "The hypothesis of disorientation on Pico dos Marins: Marco Aurélio case in 1985." Here I lay the groundwork for this expedition and why it exists, the hypothesis that the scout Marco Aurélio deviated to the Marins Canyon or Vale do Palmital. Here I will zoom in. For those who know the region, this is not the mouse pointer, this is Pico dos Marins. Here is Morro do Careca. This orange part is the trail from the base to Pico dos Marins, and this blue part is the trail that was done on the expedition on September 8th of this month of 2023. So, what was the objective of the expedition? To reconnoiter the terrain here in the valley of Grotão. In the article, this place is called Marins Canyon. However, when I wrote the article a year ago, after some studies and after going to the location, I actually discovered that the Canyon, the Marins Canyon, is not the entire valley. The canyon that Bortolosso, Márcio Bortolosso, reports is a subspace of the valley. It is located more or less here. I have never been to this region. It is impenetrable; you cannot pass from here following the water to here. The satellite image, the relief perhaps does not portray it very well, but there is a canyon with vertical walls on both sides, more or less in this region. And what we did was descend via a trail that Mr. Afonso opened back in 2012. He opened this trail because they were preparing for Pico do Maria, which is one of the adjacent peaks. So, what we did was descend via this trail. It actually, it, for those who climb the normal trail here, they don't even know a trail exists because it is not beaten, it is not marked. Even though approximately 10 years have passed since the last time, we had a lot of difficulty, as you will see in the video, going forward. It was very difficult to descend here. First, the markings, even with an experienced guide, Mr. Afonso, over 60 years old and over 50 years in the mountains, even with his photographic memory, he had to explore. You are seeing these exits and entrances here. These were hours that he, that we explored, saw it wasn't this way, found a machete mark from 10 years ago. Here at the bottom, we almost couldn't reach the water, but at the last moment, we found a passage. Please, nobody do this path. Don't do it, don't risk it. This is a warning that I give: do not descend here. This was planned for over a year and included my experience of having been there. And here, the chance of getting lost is practically 100% for those who do not have knowledge in the area. In my case, I don't have it; only the guide did. And here we reached the Marins water, which is this blue line. And this same location is where the French mountain runner Gilbert Eric Venterland also passed by in 2018. In his track log, you can see that he passes here, crosses to the other side, but this is another, this is another case. I have already explored some locations here; they will also be the subject of other videos. And the place where we presume Marco Aurélio deviated to Vale do Palmital, to the Marins Canyon, is here, after Pedra do Golfinho, on this plateau. I have, practically, a very high chance that he deviated from here because the last chalk mark left by him was here, in this spot, which is not the portal. So, he left the chalk mark here. He might have left other chalk marks, but the last one seen by his colleagues was this one, because his colleagues took this trail here towards Mr. Filhinho's house, where they ended up.
