Voyager 1 is currently the most distant spacecraft from Earth, at about 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) away, while its twin Voyager 2 has traveled over 12 billion miles (20 billion kilometers) from our planet. Both are in interstellar space and are the only spacecraft to have ever operated beyond the heliosphere, the solar bubble of magnetic fields and particles that extends far beyond Pluto's orbit. (CNN)
NASA engineers are currently trying to solve the problem as the aging spacecraft explores unknown cosmic territory along the fringes of the solar system.
The problem is serious. It's believed the spacecraft can receive commands and perform operations, but NOTHING is being sent back to Earth.
Researchers are carefully monitoring events and conducting analyses before sending further commands.
A similar, but not identical, issue occurred in 1981. When the spacecraft appeared to be stuck in an automatic loop.
