Werewolf Exists!

You must have heard the expression "lunatic", it originated in the Middle Ages when people observed that mentally ill people had the habit of running through the streets hallucinating on full moon nights.

I am very skeptical, but if the Moon can attract the Earth's waters to one side, raising the tide dozens of meters, then it can cause something in us.

I know a lady who is like that (and it's not because I'm paranoid that no one can follow me). Craziness aside, there must be something there...

Perhaps there is some truth to this story. Some lunatic bit a pretty girl, (literal bites, it should be said),

Maybe an ancestor of mine, José Lôbo, ... who knows!?

The Persistence of the Werewolf: Between Popular Belief and Scientific Interpretation

The figure of the werewolf, the human being who transforms into a wolf or lupine creature, is one of the most enduring and fascinating archetypes in world folklore. The belief in its existence, though devoid of empirical scientific proof, has permeated cultures and societies for centuries, fueling stories, fears, and speculations. As a researcher, it is essential to approach this topic by demystifying prejudices and exploring the diverse facets that sustain this persistence.

Historical and Folklore Roots: The Basis of Belief

The origin of the belief in werewolves is complex and multifaceted, dating back to ancient times. In many pre-Christian cultures, wolves were seen as sacred or demonic animals, often associated with deities or supernatural forces. The idea of a deep connection between man and wolf may have originated from:

  • Observations of Animal Behavior: The aggressiveness and predatory nature of wolves, combined with their proximity to human settlements, could have led to interpretations of supernatural transformations.
  • Trance and Altered States of Consciousness: Shamanic rituals, the use of psychoactive substances in some ancient cultures, or even high fever states could have induced experiences that were interpreted as transformations into animals.
  • Social Fears and Anxieties: In times of instability, famine, or disease, the figure of the werewolf could serve as a scapegoat, an explanation for terrible events, or a reflection of collective fears of loss of control and wildness.
  • Ancient Mythologies: Legends like that of Lycaon, king of Arcadia, who was supposedly transformed into a wolf by Zeus for offering human flesh in a sacrifice, are examples of ancient narratives that establish the concept of lupine metamorphosis.

The Lunar Cycle and the Figure of the Werewolf: A Curious Point

One of the most curious and intriguing aspects associated with the werewolf is its supposed connection with the lunar cycle, especially the full moon. This connection, although popularized in modern fiction, has roots in older and less specific beliefs. What is striking is the universality of this association in different cultures, even without direct contact. Possible explanations include:

  • The Full Moon as a Moment of Alteration: The full moon, being the most visible and brightest point of the lunar cycle, was often associated with magical events, rituals, and changes in behavior in animals and, by extension, in humans in some folklore beliefs. It was seen as a moment of potential for the supernatural to manifest.
  • Psychological Factors: In some theories, the full moon can subtly influence human behavior, exacerbating states of agitation or anxiety, which could be interpreted as a predisposition to "madness" or the "inner beast".
  • The Influence of Fiction: It is important to note that the strong and almost exclusive link to the full moon was widely reinforced by literature and cinema from the 20th century onwards, solidifying this iconic image in the popular imagination.

Scientific and Psychological Interpretations: Attempts at Explanation

Although modern science does not corroborate the literal existence of human transformations into wolves, it has sought rational explanations for the beliefs and reports about werewolves throughout the centuries. Several theories have been proposed:

  • Clinical Lycanthropy: A rare and controversial neurological condition where individuals believe they are transforming into animals, often wolves. This condition is considered a delusional disorder and not a physical transformation.
  • Hypertrichosis (Werewolf Syndrome): A rare genetic condition that causes excessive hair growth all over the body, potentially giving a more animalistic appearance. However, it does not involve transformation or inherent aggression.
  • Rabies: In ancient times, people with rabies could exhibit aggressive behavior, hydrophobia, and agitation, which could have been interpreted as "lupine ferocity" or possession.
  • Mental Illnesses: Certain psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia or psychosis, can lead to delusions and hallucinations, including the belief of being an animal or transforming.
  • Misinterpretation and Superstition: In rural or isolated communities, unusual natural events, strange behaviors of individuals with disabilities or illnesses, or even stories told and retold, could fuel belief in the supernatural.

The Werewolf in Contemporary Culture: A Powerful Symbol

Even in the face of a lack of scientific evidence, the werewolf continues to be a prominent figure in popular culture. It transcends the belief in its literal existence to become a symbol of various concepts:

  • Human Duality: It represents the struggle between reason and instinct, civility and wildness that exists within each individual.
  • Fear of the Unknown: It embodies humanity's deepest fears, what is hidden and out of control.
  • Wild Nature: It is a reminder of the primal and untamed force of nature.

Therefore, when we ask if "Werewolf Exists!", the answer, from a strictly scientific and empirical perspective, is no. However, the persistence of the belief in werewolves is a fascinating anthropological and psychological phenomenon. Its existence, more than a biological reality, resides in the vast and complex web of human imagination, fueled by ancestral fears, observations of the natural world, and the human need to make sense of the inexplicable.
