For a long time, our politics has been known worldwide for corruption, and what is coming to light is corruption in the judiciary. It's not that the number of corrupt people has increased, or that the world has worsened recently; it's that press coverage has improved significantly.
The distinction between right and wrong comes from family life; character and ethics are learned principles, not innate gifts. Power has been passed down through family lines in a vicious cycle, where no one knows honor and respect. In April 2007, the Federal Police arrested appellate judges and the leadership of illegal gambling in Rio; tomorrow, it will be in other instances, elsewhere. Organized crime is traditional and surpasses modernity; no matter the amount stolen, it's never enough, and it will never end.
What remains for us poor mortals is to redeem our economic insignificance and listen to the association of Brazilian Magistrates defend themselves with the phrase: "rigorous investigations of the facts will be carried out."
Congratulations to the Federal Police Intelligence Directorate in Brasília and to the many prosecutors who risk exposing their gains against the ancient Brazilian evil.
