07/08/2011 - (Name withheld), 23, who received an electric shock at the Ferroviário power substation on Wednesday night (6), remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Burn Hospital, breathing with the help of machines. (Name withheld) has 70% to 80% of his body burned. The circuit caused by the man de-energized the station and two others: Aeroporto and Campinas. Approximately 120,000 consumer units – corresponding to one-third of Goiânia – in 80 neighborhoods of the capital, were left without electricity. The southwest and central regions of Goiânia were affected.

To enter the station, the man, who lives in the area, jumped over the fence. The security guards, who patrol the area 24 hours a day, took him to the guardhouse, but the individual ran into the high-voltage equipment. The guards reported that (Name withheld) was distressed and claimed to have entered the premises to pray because the world was ending. There is unofficial information that he suffers from psychiatric problems.

(Name withheld) touched a disconnector switch – a device used to isolate another component of the substation – and was electrocuted. "He was repelled by one of the equipment on the incoming line," explains engineer and Celg Operations Superintendent, João de Oliveira Júnior. Celg technicians waited for an ambulance from the Fire Department to attend to the young man before the power was restored. After 30 minutes, some neighborhoods had power restored, and within another 20 minutes, the rest did as well.

The Ferroviário substation is one of 15 substations in Goiânia and is considered medium-sized. The voltage of the power distribution unit is 138,000 volts. According to Celg's Operations Superintendent, the current received by the man was approximately 100 amperes. "The human body can withstand a current of 9 milliamperes. The current he received was more than 100,000 times higher."

This was the first case of trespassing into a Celg unit for this purpose. João de Oliveira explains that, normally, when a third party enters the unit, it's for theft of office supplies or even wires. The substation is fully fenced and has warning signs about the danger of the location, as well as 24-hour security and closed-circuit TV.

The engineer believes it is a miracle that the victim survived the shock. (Name withheld)'s family declined to speak with the press and did not allow the hospital to release further information about the victim's clinical condition. The hospital only confirmed that his condition remained critical until midnight yesterday. (Cejane Pupulin from Jornal Hoje, link: O HOJE)

07/07/2011, night - The condition of (name withheld), who caused the blackout, is critical.

Yesterday, the following neighborhoods in the capital of Goiana were completely dark: Norte Ferroviário, Criméia Oeste, Criméia Leste, Marechal Rondon, Fama, Centro Oeste, and part of the central area (One in five consumer units in the capital lost power).

This happened because a man, apparently with mental problems, invaded the North Ferroviário electrical station and climbed one of the towers.

The man was severely burned due to the electric shock, with newspapers reporting this morning that at least 70% of his body was burned.

At the scene during the incident, many people speculated about the causes. The number of police vehicles that arrived led many to believe the man was fleeing the police when he entered the premises and suffered the electric shock.

Upon closer inspection, some noticed something very strange about the area he was in and stated it was a suicide attempt.

The victim's health status is still unknown, and he was taken to the Burn Hospital.

(Name withheld), 23, remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the [[Goiânia Burn Hospital]]. He suffered burns on over 70% of his body after invading the [[Celg power substation]] on Avenida Goiás Norte last Wednesday night (6). (Name withheld) suffers from psychiatric problems, according to the Fire Department, and allegedly climbed the structure of one of the electrical feeder station's transformers, where he was electrocuted.
The victim's actions caused a disruption in the power distribution network, resulting in a blackout for 120,000 consumer units, including commercial establishments and residences. (Name withheld) was subjected to a shock with a power greater than 138,000 volts, according to Celg. The hospital reported that the victim is on life support.
According to Celg's Operations Superintendent, electrical engineer João de Oliveira Júnior, power was normalized in the other substations within half an hour. Due to the incident at the Ferroviário Substation, the delay in returning to normal was longer. "We waited for SAMU and the Fire Department to arrive, so we could remove the young man and certify that the area was safe to reactivate the substation and normalize the power supply," he stated.
According to Celg's press officer, Herivelto Nunes, the site has 24-hour surveillance, and on Wednesday night, a guard was present when the young man, who appeared psychologically unbalanced, jumped over the approximately 1.80m wall. "He was not in his right mind, perhaps he has psychiatric problems or was under the influence of drugs. He said he was evangelical and had come to pray because the world was going to end the next day," he said.
According to Herivelto, the guard called another guard, who was in the Celg human resources department building, located next to the substation, to help contain the young man. According to him, the two tried to convince Giomar to leave and even escorted him to the gate, but he fled and climbed onto one of the concrete structures supporting the substation's disconnector switches.
João de Oliveira explained that the disconnector switches receive energy lines that reach the station and require a minimum isolation distance of one meter to distribute electrical energy. When Giomar brought his hand close to the device, the isolation was broken, and the protection system caused a short circuit to protect the equipment. "He didn't actually touch the device; just by getting close to such strong current, he was hit by a charge that would be almost a thousand times that of a shock from a common outlet. If he had touched the device, he wouldn't have survived," he said.
The engineer states that when one comes into contact with such a charge, each body reacts differently, but second and third-degree burns, as well as ruptured blood vessels and heart fibrillation, always occur. "It is highly unlikely that a person who gets close to this type of current survives."
Celg states that there have never been cases like this, as people generally try to stay away from the area, but they have a project to build reinforced walls with concertina – a type of rigid barbed wire – to keep people further away from the substation. Celg regretted the incident and affirms that the site is enclosed, has surveillance, and signs indicating the dangers of approaching the equipment, but that in this case, the young man's psychological state led him to ignore the safety warnings.
